Jodo seminar in Lucerne – A weekend full of training, friendship and positive energy

Jodo seminar, Lucerne

The beginning of September was dedicated to jodo, and this time our journey took us to beautiful Switzerland, specifically to Lucerne. Under the guidance of Rene van Amersfoort sensei, hachidan kyoshi, jodoka from several countries gathered for a weekend of intensive training, improving their technique and gaining new inspiration for their continued practice. Representing Hikari Dojo were our seniors, Marian and Adriana, who returned from Switzerland with not only a wealth of training experience, but also many pleasant encounters and wonderful memories.

Our journey to Switzerland began on Friday. Before heading to Lucerne, there was still time for a short visit to sunny Bern. Its historic centre, beautiful streets and pleasant September weather provided the perfect start to the weekend. And since we had not travelled to Switzerland just for sightseeing, the day continued with a private training session at Sakura dojo, led by Beat Bähler sensei. It was an excellent way to prepare for the two intensive days ahead. Training in a smaller group also provided an opportunity to work on details more closely, gain new insights and, of course, enjoy some time with our Swiss friends after practice.

On Saturday, we made our way to Lucerne, where we were welcomed by a beautiful sports hall filled with sunshine. The atmosphere was warm and friendly from the very beginning, while it was also clear that a serious amount of jodo awaited us. During the two days, we worked intensively on technique, timing, movement and the many details that often make the difference in the quality of our practice. The main focus was on preparation for the 6th dan examination, with plenty of opportunities to work on technical details and receive valuable feedback. All candidates preparing for the 6th dan examination took part in enbu, including both those taking the examination this year and those planning to do so next year. The shared enbu sessions provided a wealth of valuable experience. Being able to observe others, work with different partners and then receive advice from experienced teachers is an essential part of the preparation process.

The seminar, however, was not only about the higher grades. There was also plenty of space for jodoka preparing for the upcoming European Jodo Championships. Their training was equally full of energy, commitment and determination to improve. Everyone was therefore able to take something valuable away from the seminar, regardless of their current level. And, of course, a good seminar is also about the time spent together outside the dojo.
After a demanding day of training, we gathered on the terrace of a restaurant and enjoyed a wonderful evening together. The weather was kind enough to let us stay outside well into the evening, enjoying the pleasant warmth, good food, conversations and, above all, the company of friends.

The two days passed incredibly quickly. We returned home tired but happy, with plenty of new ideas and inspiration for our future practice. Lucerne once again reminded us that jodo is not only about technique and examinations. It is also about people, shared effort, mutual support and the joy of practising together. We are already looking forward to meeting our Swiss friends again at the beginning of the new year.
