Once again this summer, the traditional six-day international gasshuku in jodo and iaido took place in Varna, Bulgaria. This annual seminar has become a popular meeting point for budo enthusiasts from across Europe. Our sensei, Marián, attended for the third consecutive year, and once again enjoyed a perfect blend of intensive training, meaningful connections, and the relaxing seaside atmosphere that the Bulgarian coast so generously offers.
Marián arrived in Varna a few days early to unwind before the demanding seminar began. The Golden Sands resort, known for its beautiful beaches and welcoming hospitality, provided an ideal setting to recharge. This year, he stayed in a hotel with a sea view, allowing him to enjoy peaceful mornings, walks on the beach, and moments of quiet reflection between training sessions.
The training program was, as always, rich and diverse, particularly in the area of jodo. René sensei designed a dynamic and engaging schedule. In addition to ZNKR kata, participants worked through various koryu techniques, including kenjutsu and tanjo. Enbu with René sensei himself added depth to the sessions, and creative exercises offered fresh insights into both the technical and conceptual aspects of jodo. For the second year in a row, a jodo taikai was organized, featuring not only individual matches but also team competitions, bringing a sense of camaraderie and friendly rivalry to the seminar.
The iaido sessions this year focused primarily on grading preparation. Over the weekend, Marián sensei worked closely with friends from the Romanian Tamiya ryu group, revisiting foundational cutting exercises and kata.
As is tradition at this event, training was balanced with time for relaxation and social connection. Each evening, after long hours on the dojo floor, participants gathered to unwind, share stories, and reflect on the day's lessons. This harmony between serious martial practice and genuine human interaction is what makes the Varna gasshuku truly special.
We’re grateful to have been part of this seminar once again, and we’re already looking forward to the next edition, to the training, the seaside, and most importantly, the people we’ll meet there. With strong interest already building, we’re certain next year’s gasshuku will be as vibrant and unforgettable as ever.
